Kerala Cultural Association of Berlin e.V (KCAB)
Recent years have witnessed an unprecedented migration of professionals and
students from Kerala to Berlin and it is expected to continue. Berlin is attractive not only as the Capital of Germany, but also as a capital of start-up companies. While there was just a handful of Malayalees in Berlin in the years around 2000, their number has now shot up. There is no reliable count of Malayalee families, professionals or students in Berlin. However, if forums like Berlin Junction or Berlin Malayalees is any indication, one can safely assume that there are more than 100 families.
The formation of “The Kerala Cultural Association of Berlin e.V” (KCAB) was a step to provide the Keralites in Berlin a contact point to meet other Malayalees, an opportunity for families and children to come together, exchange views, and foster goodwill and understanding among its members and provide opportunities for cultural and entertainment activities for the members. KCAB does not have any religious or political affiliations. It is a non-profit organization working towards the betterment of social and cultural life of Malayalees in Berlin and surrounding areas.
Berlin has indeed a proud history of Malayalee community. The Kerala community in
Berlin was so active in the late eighties that the first ever World Malayalam Conference was held Berlin in 1986 at the ICC (International Congress Center). Because of the then prevailing socio-political conditions, (West Berlin was like an island in the middle of the former GDR) majority of the families returned to Kerala. In view of the growing Kerala Community in Berlin, the Kerala Cultural Association of Berlin e.V (KCAB) aims to build on this proud tradition.
